CCLE Lecture Videos

In many online or hybrid (partially online) courses, instructors will employ pre-recorded lecture videos for students to watch outside of class. Even in traditional classes, internal metrics show that students will often watch and rewatch videos of past classes if they are recorded and uploaded to CCLE.

This document outlines ways to create and integrate lecture videos into a CCLE course site.

Producing Lecture Videos

There are several options for producing lecture videos for a class. The easiest is to record a class meeting using Zoom. You may choose to record audio, video, or both. Once you have created or joined a Zoom meeting, you can start recording by selecting the “Record” option. You will have the option of recording to “Cloud“ or to your computer. Choosing the “Cloud“ option means the video will automatically be added to your Kaltura account, making it easier to add the video to CCLE.

If you record the meeting to your computer, upon ending the meeting the video will convert and save to your hard drive. Once you locate this file, you can rename it (should you choose) and upload it to CCLE, as detailed in the section below.

Pre-recording lectures for students to watch, especially for hybrid and online courses, is also possible. HumTech also offers a variety of resources and expertise to help Humanities instructors produce lecture videos. Take-home production kits are also available to instructors as well.

The Center for the Advancement of Teaching offers a paid service called Learning Glass, where instructors can record videos during which they can face their class while still writing on a whiteboard.

Uploading Lecture Videos to CCLE

Instructors may upload lecture videos to CCLE the same way they would any other video. The process of uploading videos to CCLE is explained in the documentation on Using Video in CCLE.

Although any approach outlined in this documentation will work, embedding a large number of videos directly into the same section of a course site can cause users to experience slow loading speeds when viewing that section, because all of the lecture videos load at the same time. It may, therefore, be preferable to create clickable links to each video.

Instructors may consider making use of the Video Quiz option when uploading lecture videos if they wish to provide students with multiple choice questions that test their understanding of the material. Although scores will not be saved, and thus, cannot be used for graded assessment, these questions allow students to check that they are understanding the material correctly. Instructors may provide hints and explanations of the correct answer.

BruinCast

Certain classrooms on campus are compatible with the Center for the Advancement of Teaching’s BruinCast service, which allows students to either stream lecture videos or listen to lectures as podcasts after the class is over. If you make use of BruinCast, the video and/or audio files will be uploaded automatically to your CCLE site after the class is over. They can be accessed through the BruinCast tab under “Media resources,” found in the list of sections on the left side of your site.   In contrast to the other methods listed above, you do not need to upload these files yourself.
