Video Resources
A Video Resource is a video embedded in or uploaded to a CCLE site, intended to be used by the students as an instructional element or for informational purposes.
There are three basic ways of embedding media in the CCLE site itself, and a fourth method for embedding media into an existing assignment or activity:
Embedding media in CCLE site:
If you want to create clickable links to uploaded media and not have it directly embedded in the CCLE webpage:
Navigate to the site, enable editing, click “Add an activity or resource”; select Video Resource at the very bottom of the list on the left.
Name and describe the video. Then click the “Add media” button under the video subheading.
In the new window that pops up, select a video that already exists in your list of media (you may select the desired player size by clicking the arrow next to the select button if you would like). OR:
In the new window that pops up, click “Add new” and then “Media Upload”. Choose a file to upload to the server, provide it with proper metadata (description and tags), and click “Save and Embed”. OR:
In the new window that pops up, select “Add new” and then “Kaltura Capture January 2021”. If you are using Kaltura Capture for the first time, you will be prompted to install the program for Windows or Mac; once this is done, you may need to click “Back” and reselect “Kaltura Capture January 2021”. You can then record a video on the spot (including video and screen captures), provide it with the proper metadata, and upload it to the server. Hit the save button that pops up in the video display after you finish recording and exit the Kaltura Capture program. More information on using Kaltura Capture can be found here.
Save the Video Resource and return to the course.
You may also create a video quiz for a video that already exists in your list of media by clicking “Add new” in step 2 and selecting “Video Quiz”. Here, you can add multiple choice questions at various parts of the video to check your students’ understanding of the video. Note, however, that CCLE will not save your students’ scores, so these cannot be used for graded assessment.
You might also wish to embed the video resource directly into a CCLE page and not just have a clickable link. To do this you would:
Navigate to the page you want to embed the video into, enable editing, click “Add resource or activity” > select the Label resource.
In the Label text box, select the icon on the bottom row that looks like a colorful starburst (the “Media button”).
Either select a pre-existing video, upload a new video, or create a new video using your webcam, following the above instructions 2a-2c.
Once your video is selected / created, click Save and return to course. You should now see your video embedded directly into the CCLE page.
Embedding media in an activity/assignment:
Navigate to the site, click on the assignment / activity you wish to add media to; for example, you may want to add video to the beginning of a quiz and have students answer questions about it. To do this:
Create the desired quiz and add in its questions from the question bank.
Either select a question to add media to, or create a label that will display the media at the top of the page.
Follow the instructions for embedding video directly to a CCLE page as listed above (steps 2-4)
In this way you can add video, audio, or still image files to any quiz, question, or assignment. Remember: if it has a text editing box, you can embed Kaltura media into it!
Media Assignments
Media Assignments are a type of assignment where the students are the ones expected to upload / create their own media to be assessed by the instructor. This is the primary way they differ from Kaltura Video Resources; they are student-submitted.
Create a Media Assignment:
Navigate to the site, enable editing, click “Add an activity or resource” and select Media Assignment.
Configure the grade and availability settings as you have previously with a normal CCLE assignment.
If you wish to add media to the assignment description, such as a sample video or example of appropriate audio, click the Kaltura button.
Follow the upload process to embed the desired video in the description field of the assignment as discussed above.
Save the assignment and return to the course page.
The students will now have an assignment in which they must upload media as part of their submission:
When they click on the assignment they will be asked to “Add media submission”
Clicking this will take them to the Kaltura media popup screen. Here, they can either select media they have already uploaded, upload a new piece of media (under the Add new button).
After they select their media, they will click the Submit Media button to finalize their submission. Please note that a student may need to scroll to the very bottom of the page to see the Submit Media button. The activities settings determine if they can later replace this upload with another, or if they only get one upload per assignment.

As the instructor, to view/comment on/grade these submissions, click on the Assignment you have created, then click on the Grade submissions button. You can click on the still frame to watch the submission. You can also click the blue Grade link under the “Status” tab to see the video, as well as give a grade and provide Feedback. Your feedback can also be in the form of an embedded video or audio clip!
Embedding an external video (Youtube) into CCLE
Follow these steps for embedding an external video resource (e.g., Youtube video) into your CCLE site:
Navigate to the Youtube video you wish to use and copy its URL.
Next, in another browser tab, navigate to the site, enable editing, click “Add resource or activity” and select Label.
From the toolbar in the window under the General tab in the Label text box, click the icon to “Show more buttons” then click the icon for Media.

4. Select the video tab, paste the link under “Video source URL” and select “Insert media”.
5. Click Save and return to course.

There are two main ways to make videos available to your students on your Bruin Learn site: embedding videos or uploading a file.
Embedding Videos
Videos can be embedded anywhere in a Bruin Learn site where the Rich Content Editor (RCE) is available. This includes Assignments, Quizzes, Announcements and Discussions.

Note: make sure to adjust your media gallery setting to control who has permission to view which videos: Bruin Learn - Media / Kaltura
Uploading/Recording Videos
You can also add media to your site by uploading/recording videos via the RCE.

This allows you to either select a file from your computer or record a video that you can then embed in your Assignment, Discussion, Quiz, Announcement, etc.. You can also add captions to the video you upload.

As a reminder, you can include a video file (such as an MP4 file) on your site anywhere you would include other types of files such as PDFs or Word Documents. This includes Pages, Modules, and Files.
