Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that increases the security of online testing in CCLE (Moodle). Before using the Respondus LockDown Browser, you must download the program directly on your course website to your computer.

Instructions

If your instructor is requiring you use Respondus LockDown Browser for your test:

  1. Using a browser such as Chrome or Firefox, go to your CCLE class page and navigate to the quiz and select the Attempt quiz now button. Do not go directly to Respondus.

  2. Now select “Launch LockDown Browser” and select Start Quiz.

  3. If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging), choose “Yes” or “Kill applications” when prompted. Or, close LockDown Browser and then close the blocked program before restarting.

Once a quiz has been started with LockDown Browser, you cannot exit until the Submit all and finish button is clicked.

Respondus Monitor

You may be required to use LockDown Browser with a webcam, which will record you during an online, non proctored exam. (The webcam feature is sometimes referred to as “Respondus Monitor.”)

Please note the following

  • Your computer must have a functioning webcam and microphone.

  • Windows users need to have Adobe Flash Player installed to Internet Explorer, even if a different browser is normally used.

  • Mac users must have Adobe Flash Player installed to Safari.

  • A broadband connection for all users is also required.

If a quiz requires LockDown Browser and a webcam, follow steps 1-5 in the previous “Taking A Test” section. At this point the Startup Sequence for the webcam begins.

  1. You will first need to review and agree to the Terms of Use.

  2. The Webcam Check will confirm that your webcam and microphone are working properly. The first time the Webcam Check is performed on a computer, Adobe Flash Player will require you to select Allow and Remember. On Mac, you will need to Allow access to the webcam and microphone if you receive a popup.

  3. The remaining steps of the Startup Sequence will depend on settings chosen by your instructor. Follow the instructions and note your progress along the top of the screen.

  4. If you encounter a problem, select the “It’s not working” link for troubleshooting tips. The quiz will begin after the Startup Sequence is complete. You cannot exit LockDown Browser until the quiz is submitted for grading.
