Distorted and/or Cutoff images

Occasionally an image you upload to the Media Library will display either distorted or have a portion of the image cutoff in the page display - this is especially true with portrait images uploaded to Staff/Faculty pages.

Distorted Images

Distorted images are typically the result of low resolution images being asked to display at too large of an aspect ratio. 

1. First, ensure the image you've uploaded to the library is the highest resolution file you have of the image.
2. If the image the image file you've uploaded is the best you have, try to adjust the display size of the image. You can attempt to adjust the display size by clicking the pencil icon in the edit function, selecting "edit original" and manipulate the scale image.
3. If the photo appears distorted even at the thumbnail level we recommend finding an alternative image.

Cutoff Images

1. As previously mentioned, cutoff images typically occur on departmental websites when inserting staff, faculty or graduate student profile photos on those appropriate pages. The display size of these images is predetermined, and thus can not be altered.
2. If the image you've inserted has a cutoff issue that renders the image unacceptable for publication on the website we first recommend cropping the image in a software outside of WordPress (i.e. Photoshop) to better match how the images display (i.e. rectangle, square). First attempt to crop either closer to the person's face, upload that image and see what results you get. If the issue is that the image you uploaded originally completely crops half a person's face we recommend widening the crop in a software outside of WordPress and uploading this new version.
3. If you do not have access to photo editing software on your computer this is how you can crop an original image within the WordPress dashboard:
   1. Select the image, click the pencil and then select "Edit Original" - please note that you are actually editing the original image which, once saved with your edits, will not be reversible so ensure you have a back up of the original on your desktop. 
   2. The "edit original" page will display the original image - take your cursor and crop from left to right by holding down and dragging until reaching the desired crop - we recommend cropping from the top left to the bottom right. 
   3. The top left icon is the crop button and, once clicked, the image will resize to your selection.
   4. You will need to hit "save" in order for this new version of the photo to appear on a page.
